627 Government Schools Non-functional Across KP: Report
According to an annual education survey, as many as 627 government schools are currently non-functional across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), primarily due to a shortage of teachers, lack of students, and various administrative and local disputes.
Teacher shortages emerged as the major reason, rendering 226 schools non-functional, while another 66 schools had no students. In addition, 28 schools remained closed due to disputes, while 11 others were affected by encroachment.
The survey revealed a stark disparity between merged districts and settled districts. 411 schools were reported non-functional in the merged districts, compared with 216 in the settled districts.

- North Waziristan: 111 non-functional schools
- Upper South Waziristan: 99
- Upper Kohistan: 68
- Kurram: 53
- Sub-Division Bannu: 45
- Bannu: 44
- Lower Kohistan: 29
- Khyber: 27
- Hangu: 16
- Battagram: 13
- Mansehra: 7
- Tank: 6
- Peshawar: 5
- Swat and Charsadda: 4 each
- Shangla: 3
- Lakki Marwat and Nowshera: 2 each
- Mardan, Karak, Kohat, and Swabi: 1 each.
