860 non-formal schools educating 30,000 out-of-school children in Multan

MULTAN, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th Sep, 2026) As many as 860 non-formal schools have been established in Multan district, providing basic education to nearly 30,000 out-of-school and dropout children, officials said Saturday.
This was disclosed by District Education Officer (Literacy) Dr Zahid Nazir Khan while addressing a seminar organized here by the Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department to mark International Literacy Day, attended by teachers, students, civil society members and field staff.
Dr Khan said literacy centers had also been set up for illiterate adults across the district. He stated that under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, illiterate prisoners in Multan's four jails were being taught under the Chief Minister's Punjab Literacy Programme (CMPLP).
He further highlighted the establishment of 36 middle schools in the district to extend education up to middle level for older children, besides setting up a separate school for transgender persons in Multan.
He appealed to civil society and teachers to support the department's efforts to raise the district's literacy rate to 100 percent.
Chief Executive Officer Education Authority Tahira Aziz, who attended as chief guest, praised the department's performance in arranging education for out-of-school and dropout children in remote areas, emphasizing that education was the only means through which the country could achieve progress. Principal Comprehensive School Abid Farid Bazdar attended as guest of honour.
Shields were distributed among children who showed outstanding performance in various categories, and MPA Laal Muhammad Joiya presented a memorial shield to Tahira Aziz. The seminar concluded with a literacy walk, attended by a large number of school teachers and civil society members.
