Abu Dhabi International Book Fair Names Mohammed Al Murr First Emirati Pioneers Honouree
The 35th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) has selected Mohammed Al Murr, Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, as the inaugural recipient of its new Emirati Pioneers initiative. This recognition highlights his significant contributions to the UAE's cultural landscape and literary heritage.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) from September 13th to 18th, 2026, the book fair will celebrate Al Murr’s:
- Preservation of national heritage
- Strengthening younger generations' connection to Arabic
- Development of cultural institutions
The Emirati Pioneers initiative is a commitment by ALC to document and share the stories of influential Emirati figures as role models for future generations.
At the fair, you can expect:
- A mural dedicated to Al Murr’s life
- A special pavilion showcasing his publications and rare collections
- A documentary screening tracing his career in Arabic and English
- Cultural events exploring his contributions to literature, media, and institution-building.
Al Murr is a renowned author having published 12 short story collections reflecting social transformations in the UAE. His journalistic articles have been compiled into several books, two of which are now part of UAE university curricula. Additionally, he has held prominent positions in cultural institutions including:
- Chairing the Cultural and Scientific Association (NADWA)
- Leading the Dubai Cultural Council
- Contributing to the establishment of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority
In the media sector, Al Murr served as Editor-in-Chief of Gulf Times and Al Bayan, addressing cultural, artistic, and community issues. He is also known for his extensive collection of rare manuscripts, fine art, and contemporary Arabic calligraphy.
Al Murr currently holds various roles including:
- Chairman of the board of Trustees of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Arabic Language Award
- Chairman of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation
- Member of several academic and cultural boards
The Emirati Pioneers initiative combines dialogue, documentation, publishing, and visual production to preserve and share the legacies of influential national figures.
