UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Sep, 2026) Ahead of the UN General Assembly’s high-level week, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world had entered “an era of deep uncertainty” and urged governments to embrace international cooperation to address global threats.

Key Threats Identified:

Guterres highlighted three primary existential threats:

  • Runaway artificial intelligence (AI)
  • The climate crisis
  • Deepening inequalities

He also reiterated calls for a two-State solution in the Middle East and a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

Global Leadership Meeting:

More than 100 world leaders, including Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are scheduled to address the Assembly, as New York prepares for stringent security measures during the week. PM Sharif is set to speak on September 25.

Reforming Institutions, Upholding Principles:

While acknowledging the need for global institution reform, Guterres emphasized that the UN's core promises remain unchanged: maintaining peace and protecting human rights. He stated, “Updating our structures can never mean abandoning our principles – it must mean applying those principles with even greater determination.”

Urgent Action Required:

The Secretary-General called on Member States to:

  • Uphold the UN Charter
  • Defend international law
  • Protect human rights
  • Invest in sustainable development
  • Promote peace globally

He expressed particular concern for the devastations in Gaza and the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for “de-escalation, diplomacy, and dialogue” to resolve these conflicts.

Middle East Focus:

Guterres stressed the need for de-escalation in the Middle East, emphasizing respect for navigational rights in the Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab Straits and the protection of civilians. He also called for an end to Israel’s annexation of the West Bank.

Endless Ukraine Conflict:

Four years after Russia's invasion, Guterres noted there is "no end in sight," calling for an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards a "just, lasting, and comprehensive peace."

Addressing AI Concerns:

Devoting nearly half his address to AI, Guterres recognized its immense potential in areas like health, education, and climate but also expressed concern about the rapid development outpacing our understanding of associated risks.
