All Relevant Departments On High Alert As Rain Continues In Rawalpindi

Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Salman Ghani has directed all relevant departments to remain on high alert as intermittent rain continues in the city.
WASA, Civil Defence, Rescue 1122 and district administration teams, along with heavy machinery, have been deployed in low-lying areas to deal with possible water accumulation. The commissioner directed the authorities to ensure effective drainage arrangements in Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, Dhok Khuba, Circular Road, Sadiqabad and other low-lying areas, besides maintaining continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai.
The water level in Nullah Lai had risen to 17.5 feet at Katarian and 16 feet at Gawalmandi before receding to 10 feet and 13 feet, respectively. According to Meteorological Department data:
- 95 mm of rain was recorded at Saidpur
- 99 mm at Golra
- 104 mm at Bokra
- 102 mm at PMD
- 127 mm at Shamsabad
- 147 mm at Kachhari
- 123 mm at Pirwadhai
- 120 mm at New Katarian.
The commissioner stated that the current monsoon spell was likely to continue until August 21 and directed all concerned agencies to strengthen preparations.
Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Captain (Retd) Nadeem Nasir urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the rain and avoid unnecessary travel. He advised residents to:
- Stay away from rivers and electricity poles
- Avoid entering accumulated rainwater in streets and neighbourhoods
- Keep a close watch on children
- Not throw garbage into drains and sewers or remove sewer covers
- Contact the WASA helpline at 1334 or the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) helpline at 1129 in case of an emergency.
