AT UNSC, Pakistan Slams RSF Aggression in Ongoing Sudanese Civil War, Urges Rejection of Parallel Rule
Pakistan expressed its profound concern over the escalating violence in Sudan and strongly condemned the aggressive assaults by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is attempting to overthrow the internationally recognized Sudanese government.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, stated during a debate on the deteriorating situation in Sudan on Monday:
"Reports of RSF’s aggressive military posture and the risk of further escalation must be considered alongside the pattern of mass atrocities committed by the RSF in Darfur, including in El Geneina and El Fasher."
He emphasized that the UN Security Council and the international community cannot remain passive while another city and its civilians are subjected to such atrocities.
The conflict in Sudan has been an ongoing civil war since April 2023, sparked by a power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Ambassador Asim Ahmad highlighted the plight of civilians caught in the conflict, calling for:
- Protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law.
- Safe and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need across Darfur, the Kordofans, and Blue Nile.
- Preservation and strengthening of Sudan's national institutions.
- Rejection of any parallel political structures that could fragment the country.
Pakistan emphasized the African Union's pivotal role in resolving the conflict, stressing that a political solution is the only way forward.
