Nottingham attacks: Victim’s death ‘potentially preventable’, inquiry hears

On 13 June 2023, Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates were stabbed to death by Valdo Calocane. The inquiry into their deaths has heard that Barnaby’s passing was "potentially preventable."
"More rapid administration of blood products" could have improved Barnaby’s chances of survival, as he had less than a 50% chance of pulling through due to the severity of his injuries. In contrast, Grace and Ian’s deaths were deemed "not preventable."
The assessment by a panel of medical professionals noted that while emergency responders worked diligently, several other crucial steps would have been required for Barnaby to survive even if blood products had been administered earlier.
The families of the victims reacted emotionally as these findings were read out during the inquiry’s closing statements.
The Nottingham Inquiry began in February and heard evidence from over 100 witnesses over three months. It revealed errors in Valdo Calocane’s care, previous interactions with police, and failings before and after the attacks.
Calocane, who also seriously injured three others, is serving an indefinite hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder.
