If Babar Azam was unaware of team changes, what was he doing as captain?, asked the legendary fast bowler.
LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2026) Former Pakistan Test captain Wasim Akram has termed Babar Azam's decision to accept the captaincy of the national Test team a mistake.
Speaking at a charity fundraising event in Manchester alongside former captain Waqar Younis, 60-year-old Wasim Akram said, “I do not want to blame anyone, and I could be wrong, but in my opinion, Babar Azam should not have accepted the captaincy. It was all unnecessary.”
Wasim Akram stated that during the third Test's toss, Babar Azam was asked about the replacement of seven players and the coach, to which Azam replied he did not know. “If you do not know, then what are you doing here—selling chickpeas?” he quipped.
He further added that as a player and a person, he believed that if a leader or captain did not stand by the team, players could not give their 100 percent. “In my opinion, after what happened following the second Test, Babar Azam should have said that he would play only as a player.”
