Andros Townsend: Being run over by pitch roller was terrifying

BBC Sport

England winger Andros Townsend has recalled the "terrifying" moment he was run over by a pitch roller in Thailand, describing it as a close call that left him with only "a couple of bumps and bruises".

Townsend, who now plays for PT Prachuap in the Thai League 1, shared his experience on Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored. He had joined Kanchanaburi Power in 2025 when the incident occurred during a warm-up before a match in Pattani on Saturday.

"Every time I see it, I'm cringing, I'm in disbelief," he said of the roller incident. "Thankfully I was fortunate I did manage to fall on to the floor at the right time, so nothing snapped as the roller went over me."

The 35-year-old revealed his team-mates were shocked by his decision to continue warming up after the accident but noted that he had no choice but to push through.

"I thought either my left ankle was going to snap or my left knee is going to snap," he said, referring to previous operations on both joints. "I thought I was done."

Despite the scare, Townsend insisted that the roller incident will not deter him from continuing his football career.

He added humorously on Instagram: "It turns out Stoke away wasn't so bad after all."
