SAO PAULO, 4th September, 2026 (WAM): The Brazilian government stated on Thursday that it might implement reciprocal actions against the European Union (EU) if negotiations to overturn the bloc's ban on animal products from Brazil do not yield a "satisfactory outcome."
According to a statement by the Brazilian agriculture ministry, they would consider such measures if a suitable solution remains elusive.
"Brazilian authorities expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of dialogue prior to the measure’s implementation," the ministry said, emphasizing that the suspension "does not align with the depth of the strategic partnership between Brazil and the EU."
The EU suspended imports of animal goods from Brazil, encompassing beef, poultry, eggs, and honey, effective September 3, 2026. This block was triggered by new EU guidelines regarding the control and use of antimicrobial substances in livestock production.
In May, the bloc decided to exclude Brazil from its list of countries authorized to export certain animal products, arguing that Brazil had not provided adequate assurances that its livestock production met EU standards against antibiotic growth promoters and other restricted drugs.
