Burnham Promises Continued Pressure on Russia Despite Threats
BBC News reports that Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister, has pledged to maintain pressure on Russia during his first official visit to Ukraine. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and chaired a meeting of the "coalition of the willing," established by the UK and France under his predecessor.
Burnham emphasized that the coalition is "doing everything we can" while calling on the US Congress to intensify economic sanctions against Russia. A significant development is the UK's decision to share blueprints for British-made components of the Scalp missile, enabling Ukraine to produce this weapon domestically.
During discussions with France and Ukraine, Burnham urged allies to enhance their air defense capabilities to protect Ukraine. He stated, "This is the moment to keep up the pressure on Russia, the moment to squeeze their ability to fund this illegal war." He praised Ukraine's resilience, calling it "Europe's protector" that ensures European security.
The Kremlin has criticized this move, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov arguing that it hinders peace efforts and promises Russian military action against missile production sites. Burnham responded by questioning who initiated the conflict.
This visit follows escalating Russian strikes on Ukraine, including a recent attack on a shopping center that resulted in at least 16 fatalities. Burnham laid flowers at Ukrainian soldiers' graves and received an award from Zelensky on behalf of the UK's support for Ukraine during Independence Day celebrations.
Burnham affirmed the UK's unwavering backing for Kyiv, stating, "Ukraine's security is our security." He promised continued support until a just and lasting peace is achieved, adding that the friendship between Ukraine and the UK will endure beyond Russia's war.
