Field Marshal Asim Munir’s second visit to Tehran in a month signals positive progress, DG ISPR says in an interview with Reuters.
DG ISPR, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, expressed cautious optimism about Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States, stating that Pakistan continues to work to bring the two sides to the negotiating table. However, he noted the presence of negative elements in the region that seek to prolong the conflict for their interests.
In the Reuters interview, Chaudhry emphasized the need for caution due to the sensitivity of the Iran-US tensions. He highlighted Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent high-level visit to Tehran, accompanied by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Türkiye’s intelligence chief Ibrahim Qalin, as an important step in joint diplomatic efforts to halt the ongoing war.
Chaudhry also discussed the Makkah joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, stating that it allows for the inclusion of new members, including Iran, if they align with the concept of regional peace. He emphasized Pakistan's commitment to Saudi Arabia's defence, particularly the protection of the holy sites of Haramain Sharifain. However, he clarified that Pakistan is not involved in Yemen's conflict.
