China Warns of Safeguarding Its Interests Amid US Sanctions Against Iran
BBC News reports that China has vowed to protect its interests in response to the US' expanded economic sanctions against Iran, which include Beijing as a significant trading partner.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman's Statement
Lin Jian, China's foreign ministry spokesman, expressed strong opposition to what he termed "illegal unilateral sanctions". He assured that China would take "all necessary measures" to safeguard its rights, emphasizing:
"Cooperation between China and Iran has always been conducted within the framework of international law and should not be interfered with or disrupted."
US Treasury Secretary's Announcement
Scott Bessent, US Treasury Secretary, described the new sanctions as "the single greatest financial offensive ever" against Iran. He warned banks and businesses that they would face isolation if they continued trading with Iran, stating: "No one was above the reach of US sanctions."
Context and Potential Impact
This announcement comes ahead of scheduled talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next month. Beijing's response is significant as it processes most rare earths and critical minerals vital for high-tech production. China has already tightened export controls on these materials in previous trade negotiations with the US.
Iran, for its part, is prepared for the wider sanctions, according to Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh, who added that such measures would lead to another defeat for the US.
