Divisional administration Multan has finalized a broad-based committee with public-private representation on the orders of the high court, with environmental protection as its sole domain. The committee is responsible for identifying problems and creating a feasible action plan to mitigate the effects of climate change.

In its inaugural meeting held here Monday, chaired by Commissioner Multan Amir Kareem Khan, the committee decided that it is binding on people to plant ten (10) trees per acre if they secure state land under any government scheme.

The committee comprises:

  • All Deputy Commissioners
  • Officials from forest, PHA, environment protection department, Wasa, Suthra Punjab
  • Additional Advocate General
  • President, High Court Bar Association
  • Representatives of civil society

Commissioner Khan emphasized that plantation should be a way of life, not just a campaign. He instructed Patwaris to maintain plantation records in their 'Roznamcha' according to the 'Khasra' number. He also directed that trees be properly nurtured and monitored monthly.

Khan further mentioned that students will be responsible for tree care over a prolonged period under the one student, one plant initiative. He recommended expanding the program's scope and sent proposals to the government.

The committee discussed finalising development projects for each park based on their needs and opening school playgrounds for public use during the evening.

Amir Kareem Khan stated that the business community, including large industrial groups, traders' bodies, NGOs, and organizations, would be encouraged to join the green initiative. He scheduled the next committee meeting to review the implementation of today's decisions.
