Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Speaker of the National Assembly, emphasized on Thursday the crucial role Commonwealth Parliaments must play in reinforcing democracy and upholding international law. He stated:

“Democratic institutions must remain transparent, accountable, inclusive, and effective to maintain public trust and withstand emerging challenges.”

His remarks were made during the General Debate of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), held in Cape Town on the theme "New Leadership Opportunities for Commonwealth Parliamentary Action to Strengthen Democracy and International Law."

The NA Speaker commended South Africa's democratic journey, highlighting that the conference aligns with three significant milestones:

  1. The 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
  2. The 30th anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution adoption in 1996.
  3. The International Day of Democracy observed on September 15.

Ayaz Sadiq noted that these events remind the Commonwealth parliamentary community of the sacrifices made to build democracy, the importance of constitutional institutions, and the need for active citizen participation, especially by young people.

He also expressed gratitude to South Africa's Parliament and people for their remarkable democratic progress and hosting the Commonwealth family at this historic moment.

The Commonwealth, Ayaz Sadiq remarked, is a unique community of nations united by shared values, as outlined in the Commonwealth Charter. This charter provides a collective framework based on:

  • Democracy
  • Constitutional governance
  • Rule of law
  • Human rights
  • Sustainable development
  • Peace and international cooperation

Under the Commonwealth's new strategic direction, he advocated for more active parliamentary leadership in promoting democracy, strengthening institutions, advancing sustainable development, empowering youth, leveraging technology, and fostering peace. Ayaz Sadiq stressed that democracy extends beyond elections; it also demands transparency, accountability, and effectiveness from institutions facing political divisions, conflicts, economic shocks, and technological challenges.

Addressing international law, he emphasized the significance of adhering to fundamental principles:

  • Respect for the United Nations Charter
  • Sovereignty of states
  • Peaceful dispute resolution
  • Protection of civilians

Ayaz Sadiq reiterated Pakistan's commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful engagement as preferred methods for resolving disputes, as well as support for regional de-escalation and constructive dialogue.
