Radiation link in flight attendant's breast cancer, French court finds

A French court has for the first time recognised cosmic radiation as a factor in the breast cancer of a long-serving flight attendant.

Sophie Lainault's Case

Sophie Lainault, a 59-year-old former stewardess on Air France, sought to have her cancer recognised as an occupational disease, brought on by conditions at work. The court ruling confirmed that cosmic radiation, along with passive smoking and prolonged night work, contributed to her illness.

This decision entitles Lainault, who is in remission, to early retirement with all further treatment expenses covered by the French health system. Furthermore, it paves the way for other flight crew members to make similar claims, according to lawyers.

"My dearest wish is that the decision encourages other women who up until now have not had the courage to take this step," said Lainault.

Flight Hours and Exposure

As a stewardess and later purser on Air France airliners, Lainault logged over 12,600 flight hours between 1989 and 2019, including more than half at night. Her flights often took her near the North Pole, where cosmic radiation exposure is intense.

Research Findings

A study by Harvard Medical School this month found that flight attendants and pilots have the highest rate of radiation-related cancer deaths among various professions, with 6.9% and 6.7% respectively. These rates surpass even nuclear technologists, who are regularly exposed to radiation.

Air France's Response

Air France stated that it had not participated in Lainault's legal case and was unacquainted with the court's reasoning. They emphasised their commitment to staff health and safety, claiming that every employee receives medical accompaniment exceeding regulatory standards.
