Critics Celebrate Céline Dion's 'Risky' Comeback Show in Paris
The British Broadcasting Corporation reports that iconic Canadian pop singer Céline Dion returned to the stage in Paris on Saturday, marking her long-awaited comeback after a six-year hiatus due to health issues. The 58-year-old superstar, one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, has not performed a full show since 2020, with her tour cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Much-Anticipated Return
Dion's residency at the Paris La Défense Arena—Europe's largest covered concert arena—consists of 26 shows throughout September and October, and into the New Year. In her emotional return, she told the audience of about 30,000 people: "I made a promise... to be back on stage. And here I am."
"I am everything I am because you loved me," she expressed to the crowd, eliciting tears from many in attendance. The singer appeared visibly moved several times throughout her performance, with The Mirror's Lucy Needham noting that she may have needed extra time to "compose herself" before her "emotionally charged return."
A Night of Emotion and Celebration
Dion started her set in a black gown but later changed into a trouser suit, showcasing her signature dance moves. The Telegraph's Neil McCormick described the night as a "tense, tearful, joyous affair... even more so for the singer than for her loyal audience." He noted that her vocals were initially fragile but gained confidence with each moment back on stage.
As the audience roared in approval, Dion broke down in tears once again, marking a significant moment in her much-anticipated comeback.
