Defence & Martyrs Day: Quaid's Vision of a Strong Air Force Continues to Inspire Nation

On Sunday, the nation celebrated the 61st Defence and Martyrs Day, marking a significant moment as we remember the words of Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. His vision for a strong and professional Pakistan Air Force (PAF) continues to resonate as a powerful reminder of its importance in safeguarding our sovereignty.
Quaid's Vision for the PAF
During his historic visit to the Royal Pakistan Air Force (RPAF) school Risalpur in Nowshera on April 13, 1948, Quaid-e-Azam articulated his vision for Pakistan's air defence. Despite his deteriorating health, he travelled to Risalpur and addressed a gathering of officers and cadets, emphasizing the need for a robust PAF to protect the country from both internal and external threats.
This visit holds a special place in Pakistan's military history as it was the only military training institution visited by Quaid after the creation of Pakistan on August 14, 1947. His presence at PAF Academy Risalpur highlighted his keen interest in developing Pakistan's armed forces and his belief that national security depended on well-trained and disciplined personnel.
In his address, Quaid-e-Azam underscored the crucial role of air power in national defence:
"There is no doubt that a country without a strong air force is at the mercy of an aggressor. Pakistan must build up her air force as quickly as possible. It must be an efficient air force second to none and must take its right place with the Army and the Navy in securing the country’s defence."
A Lasting Legacy
Nearly eight decades later, Quaid's words remain deeply ingrained in the culture of the Pakistan Air Force and continue to inspire generations. In March 2017, PAF Academy Risalpur was renamed after Air Marshal Asghar Khan, the first Muslim Commander-in-Chief of the PAF, further cementing its historical significance.
Quaid-e-Azam's admiration for the armed forces, including the PAF, is well documented. Manzoorul Haq, a former Ambassador, noted that Quaid's address at Risalpur served as a guiding light for the PAF, providing a clear vision for building a formidable defence force. He added that the PAF has consistently demonstrated its professionalism, bravery, and operational prowess during Pakistan's wars.
The PAF's achievements over the years stand testament to Quaid's dream of making it second to none.
