Dr Rabia Ghafoor said psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that primarily affects the skin but may also be associated with joint problems and other health complications, requiring long-term management through medication and lifestyle modifications.
ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Oct, 2026) Psoriasis, according to Dr Rabia, is a complex condition:
- It is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, with a higher risk for individuals with a family history.
- Cold weather, dry conditions, stress, and infections can trigger or worsen flare-ups.
Beyond the skin, Dr Rabia explained, psoriasis can manifest as:
- Joint problems: Affecting up to 30% of people with psoriasis.
- Other health issues: Including high cholesterol, obesity, fatty liver disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
The disease typically appears as red or pink patches covered with silvery scales, commonly on the scalp, knees, elbows, and other areas.
Treatment options range from:
- Topical medications
- Oral drugs
- Injectable therapies
Petroleum jelly can help moisturize the skin and reduce scaling.
However, unsupervised and prolonged use of steroid creams should be avoided, as they can lead to:
- Skin thinning
- Ulcers
- Increased facial hair
- Facial swelling
Dr Rabia emphasized that psoriasis is not contagious and can be effectively managed through:
- Appropriate medical treatment
- Regular care
- Lifestyle changes
She also advised patients to:
- Limit highly refined sugars and foods contributing to weight gain and inflammation.
