Development Must Get Same Urgency as Security: PM
UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 26th Sep, 2026) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called for timely debt relief, affordable long-term financing, and a stronger voice for developing countries in global financial institutions, emphasizing that development should receive the same urgency as security.
Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the prime minister noted that Pakistan, contributing less than one percent of global emissions, still bears the brunt of climate change consequences. He urged developed countries to honor their climate-finance commitments without delay, swiftly fund loss and damage, and support adaptation and resilience measures.
Shehbaz Sharif also expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for leading initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative. These, he said, could serve as the foundation for a shared future for humanity.
Regarding Pakistan's economic situation, the prime minister highlighted his government's efforts to revive the economy. Through structural reforms and fiscal discipline, the government has achieved macro-economic stability and is on a path towards sustainable and inclusive growth.
He described Pakistan's initiatives in modernizing agriculture and industry, developing mineral resources, and digitizing the economy. The country is also equipping its youth with modern AI and IT skills. Shehbaz Sharif mentioned Pakistan's strengthening regional connectivity through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its links to the Gulf, Central Asia, and beyond.
