Londonderry: Viable explosive device sent to hotel in package

BBC News reports on an incident in Londonderry where a "viable postal device" was delivered to a hotel, prompting a security alert.

Police believe dissident republicans may be responsible for the device. It was discovered and safely detonated on Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Supt Gillian Kearney condemned the act as "shameful and utterly abhorrent," emphasizing the callousness of the perpetrators.

The investigation is ongoing, with Kearney appealing for information. She suggests that dissident republicans may be involved, but all lines of enquiry are being considered.

The incident caused the evacuation of The Ebrington Hotel and nearby premises, raising concerns about the timing in the run-up to Halloween.

Local residents and politicians, including Teresa Boyle and Grace Uí Niallais, expressed their dismay, emphasizing the community's desire for peace. Naomi Long, Justice Minister, also condemned the act as "abhorrent," acknowledging the danger it posed to families and young people celebrating Halloween.

Councillor Darren Guy suggests a possible link to a Ministry of Defence (MoD) event held at the hotel, but these are still lines of enquiry.
