Novak Djokovic broke down in tears during a US Open first-round defeat by Argentina's Mariano Navone, providing further evidence that age is catching up with the 39-year-old great.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion showed his renowned fighting spirit before succumbing to a 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 4-6 6-2 6-1 loss. This was the first time Djokovic had been beaten in the opening round at Flushing Meadows and his first defeat in the opening round of a Grand Slam since 2006.
Djokovic managed to smile while congratulating Navone on what will be considered one of the Argentine's biggest career victories. However, after a moment of grace and class, he became disconsolate as he left the court, breaking down again upon returning to his locker room.
