Drought declared in Yorkshire after dry weather

BBC News reports on the drought declaration in Yorkshire following months of unusually dry weather.

Environment Agency's Concern

The Environment Agency (EA) has stated that Yorkshire is experiencing its fifth driest period from April to September on record, leading to the drought declaration. Despite recent rainfall, low water levels in reservoirs and rivers prompted this move.

Yorkshire Water, however, is not planning to implement water restrictions for customers at this stage, according to Andy Shaw, head of water production, treatment, and energy.

EA manager Vicki Townend remarked that the drought declaration reflects dry conditions across Yorkshire but "does not mean water restrictions are currently needed."

Key Points

  • Drought Status: Yorkshire officially entered drought status on Friday due to a lack of spring and summer rainfall.
  • Water Levels: Low water levels in reservoirs and rivers contributed to the EA's decision.
  • No Immediate Restrictions: Yorkshire Water is not introducing water restrictions despite the declaration.
