The San Marino-flagged Wine Trader caught fire off Romania's coast on Thursday morning, with 12 crew members on board. According to naval authorities, eight are missing and there are reports of explosions.
The tanker was about 13 nautical miles (24km) east of the mouth of the River Danube at Sulina when the incident occurred. There are unconfirmed reports from nearby ships that the tanker was hit by two drones.
Swarms of Russian drones were detected near Ukraine's Snake Island, not far from the scene of the fire, overnight. This follows a spate of drone attacks on the west coast of the Black Sea in the past two weeks, including one on a Bulgarian ship which sank on Tuesday. Bulgaria suspected Russia behind that attack.
