England attack's 2005 comparisons fair - Trescothick

Marcus Trescothick: England's New Pace Attack Compares to 2005 Team

BBC Sport reports that Marcus Trescothick, interim head coach of England's cricket team, draws comparisons between the current pace attack and the legendary 2005 squad.

"We do have some real skill... you could easily make [comparisons] to [Stephen] Harmy, Fred, Simon and Hoggy," Trescothick stated.

The current quartet of Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue has emerged following Ben Stokes' retirement, leading England to a series win over Pakistan. Their complementary skills bear resemblance to the iconic seamers of 21 years ago: Stephen Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones, and Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff.

Trescothick, a member of the 2005 team that reclaimed the Ashes, emphasizes the team's current form after a period of struggles, attributing it to having "four who are match fit" and a strong backup.

He notes a shift in focus from high-pace bowling to a more balanced approach, with Robinson's rhythmical action reminiscent of Glenn McGrath. The team's success comes amid a series of victories, halting England's previous poor run of only two wins in 10 Tests.

"What we do have is three guys bowling at 92 miles an hour... and the more that they play together... it fits into place to how you want it to be," Trescothick added.

Michael Vaughan, England's captain in 2005, concurred, stating in a Telegraph article that the current attack can only be compared to his team when they won a major series.
