England Head Coach Steve Borthwick’s Future Secured

England head coach Steve Borthwick will have his contract extended beyond the 2028 Six Nations in a move to provide clarity before the upcoming Rugby World Cup. This strategy mirrors the approach taken with Red Roses boss John Mitchell prior to the 2025 World Cup.
According to RFU performance director Conor O’Shea, extending Borthwick’s deal will offer stability, ensuring the coaching team is not in a position of uncertainty during the World Cup.
"You don’t want them looking for a job going into [a World Cup]," O’Shea explained. "Everyone knows it will be judged on the World Cup, but you can’t have a group of coaches going in with that uncertainty."
England’s Potential at the World Cup
O’Shea expressed confidence in Borthwick’s ability to lead England to success in Australia, stating: "I see in Steve someone who bleeds England… I believe this team can win a World Cup."
England’s performance in the Nations Championship, with two wins from three, including victories over Fiji and Argentina, has further bolstered faith in the team’s capabilities.
Selection Rules Debated
While Borthwick faces challenges due to selection rules limiting him to players based in the English Prem, O’Shea defended the policy, stating: "It is something done not just for England, but for English rugby."
However, players like Jack Willis from Toulouse are ineligible, leading Courtney Lawes to suggest a review of the selection criteria.
