Extreme Thunderstorms Rip Through Toronto, Causing Widespread Disruption

TORONTO, (UrduPoint) | September 04, 2026 | A powerful set of thunderstorms swept through southern Ontario, bringing chaos to Toronto's rush hour.
Cars were stranded in flooded streets, tens of thousands of residents lost power, and panicked commuters sought shelter from the intense hail and high winds.
Multiple weather emergency alerts were issued, with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) raising its flood warning to its highest level.
On Wednesday evening, Toronto Hydro initially reported that 65,000 customers were without power, mainly in Etobicoke, North York, Midtown, and East York. They assured that crews were working diligently but acknowledged that restoration efforts might take time and vary by location.
The Toronto police received numerous reports of fallen trees and downed power lines across the city.
Toronto Pearson International Airport also suffered, with hundreds of flight delays and cancellations due to the severe late-summer storm that brought high winds, torrential rain, and hail to the region. They advised passengers to check their flight status directly with their airline before heading to the airport.
