FDE Upgrades 30 Science Labs in Islamabad Schools
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 11th Sep, 2026) The federal government on Friday inaugurated 30 newly renovated science laboratories at 22 institutions of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), including Islamabad Model College for Boys (IMCB), F-8/4, as part of the Prime Minister’s Education Reforms Programme to modernise public-sector schools and promote hands-on science education.
Inauguration
Federal Education Minister Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui inaugurated the facilities, which have been equipped with modern scientific equipment, improved safety features, and activity-based workstations enabling students to learn through experimentation and inquiry. The inauguration ceremony was attended by:

- FDE Director General, Javed Iqbal Mirza
- Senior ministry and FDE officials
- Heads of educational institutions
- Teachers
- Parents and other stakeholders
Importance of Science Education
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Siddiqui highlighted that science education could not reach its full potential without opportunities for students to observe, investigate, experiment, and discover. He believed modern laboratories would foster innovation, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking among students, preparing them for future scientific and technological demands.
Project Details
Mr Mirza noted that Phase-I of the Science Laboratories Renovation Project had been completed, covering 30 laboratories in 22 FDE institutions. These upgraded facilities include:
- 15 combined science laboratories
- 6 physics laboratories
- 5 chemistry laboratories
- 4 biology laboratories
The FDE mentioned that many laboratories had become outdated and were established decades ago. They have now been redesigned according to modern scientific and pedagogical requirements, featuring activity-based workstations with water, gas, and electricity facilities for practical experiments and collaborative learning. Curriculum-aligned scientific equipment and enhanced safety measures have also been introduced.
Future Plans
Mr Mirza stated that Phase-II of the project has already begun, with a request for proposals floated to renovate another 60 science laboratories across FDE institutions. Rural and girls’ institutions will be given special preference in this phase.
Secretary Nadeem Mahbub emphasised the importance of modern laboratories for strengthening practical education and providing students with meaningful opportunities to experiment and apply scientific concepts. He praised the efforts of the ministry, FDE, and all involved in the successful execution of the project.
