Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired an important federal cabinet meeting where, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Finance, new designs for the country’s currency notes were approved. The cabinet also decided, as part of economic reforms, to discontinue the Rs10 banknote and introduce a Rs10 coin in its place.

According to details, a comprehensive briefing on the designs of the new currency notes was presented during the federal cabinet meeting. The cabinet was informed that suggestions had been sought from renowned artists, art experts, and professional designers across the country to create attractive and modern designs for the new notes.

To ensure a transparent and inclusive process, the prime minister had constituted a special cabinet committee, which finalized the designs after detailed consultations with all relevant stakeholders, economists, and financial institutions.

The briefing also highlighted the growing problem of counterfeit currency notes in the market, which has caused significant economic damage in recent years. To combat this issue, advanced security features have been incorporated into the new currency notes, making it easier for the public and banks to identify counterfeits.

State-of-the-art, high-quality material will be used in their production, increasing their durability and service life, and reducing the financial burden of repeatedly printing new notes.

It was further informed that another key decision was to discontinue the Rs10 paper banknote and issue a Rs10 coin instead. Coins of low denominations are generally more durable and remain usable for longer periods than low-value currency notes worldwide. This move will save substantial costs incurred in replacing small-denomination notes and improve the distribution of reserve currency in the market.

Additionally, the federal cabinet approved the transfer of the chief minister’s delegated powers to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for conducting routine affairs during periods of emergency in the province and enhancing governance and the administration of provincial matters. The governor will submit a monthly review report on this matter to the federal government.

The cabinet also ratified the defence cooperation agreement signed between Pakistan and Kuwait on June 11, 2023, aiming to strengthen defence ties between the two countries. The federal cabinet also ratified decisions taken at various meetings held in recent months by the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises and the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases.
