Five men who were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences near RAF Fairford have been released on police bail. Counter-terror police revealed this update, stating that the men, all UK nationals in their 20s from London, are being investigated for potential involvement in terrorism.
Initially detained under the Explosives Act, they faced further arrests for preparation of a terrorist act. Despite their release, they remain under investigation with stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others.
The incident involved three "suspicious vehicles" near the Gloucestershire airbase early Sunday morning, leading to evacuations and a major response from counter-terrorism officers exploring various lines of inquiry, including potential foreign state involvement.
A farmer's timely 999 call played a crucial role, as she described seeing "a large group of hooded and masked men" upon returning home to find her driveway blocked.
This prompted a swift police response, with Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor emphasizing their examination of the vehicles with forensic experts and military assets. Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged caution while authorities investigate.
The Iranian embassy in London denied any link to the incident, condemning "unfounded and malicious speculations."
