Five more arrests in wrong-way crash investigation
BBC News reports on the latest developments in the A66 Middlesbrough crash investigation. Seven people were killed when a Volkswagen Passat drove the wrong way down the motorway and collided with a police vehicle, including PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades, two police officers.
Twelve arrests had already been made, and subsequently, five more individuals have been arrested:
- A 16-year-old boy
- An 18-year-old man
- A 21-year-old man
- A 55-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender
- A 23-year-old man on suspicion of making threats to kill.
These arrests bring the total number of suspects held to 17.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed that officers had been pursuing the car for almost seven minutes prior to the crash, but they abandoned the pursuit 10 seconds before the collision due to the vehicle turning onto the dual carriageway.
