Former MCCI President Seeks Diesel Relief

UrduPoint (23 September, 2026) - Former MCCI President Khawaja Muhammad Hussain called for extending the government’s Rs100 per litre petroleum relief package to diesel used by goods transport, tractors and tube-wells. He also advocated for notifying regionally competitive electricity and gas tariffs for export-oriented industries, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Hussain noted that:

  • Petroleum prices in Pakistan have risen sharply since the Iran conflict began in February 2026.
  • Petrol prices have increased by 48 per cent and high-speed diesel by 50 per cent compared to a 38 per cent increase in international Brent crude prices during the same period.

He stressed that while motorcycles and small cars received Rs100 per litre relief, similar support was needed for diesel consumers whose activities directly impact transportation, agricultural production, and industrial costs.

Key points:

  • The current high fuel prices pose a risk to industry, agriculture and exports.
  • Industry should focus on energy conservation, inventory management and cost control.
  • Timely support in the form of diesel relief and competitive export tariffs can help the sector sustain operations and increase exports.
