French Tourist Dies in Death Valley After Car Gets Stuck in Mud

The Incident
Formosa and his French companion were driving through Death Valley when their car became stuck in mud on West Side Road. They decided to walk across the salt flats to seek help. After approximately 1.3 miles, the severe heat prevented Formosa from continuing, and he was later found dead by rangers and police.
Extreme Heat Warning
Death Valley National Park, known for its extreme heat, is currently under an extreme heat warning. The park recorded a global high temperature of 57°C (134°F) in 1913. The recent heatwaves across the United States have led to numerous heat-related deaths, including four hikers in the Grand Canyon in June.
Superintendent's Statement
Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds expressed sorrow and reminded visitors of the potential dangers:
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous."
The cause of Formosa's death is under investigation by coroners.
