US Open 2026 Results: Toby Samuel's Historic Win and Cameron Norrie's Early Exit
BBC Sport reports on the US Open 2026, highlighting Toby Samuel's significant achievement.
British Qualifier Toby Samuel Makes History
Toby Samuel, the 23-year-old British qualifier, has made his mark at the US Open, securing his first Grand Slam main-draw win. In a dominant performance, Samuel defeated former world number 20, Tomas Machac, in straight sets: 6-2 6-3 6-2.
"It means everything to me. It's what I dreamt of as a kid watching these big tournaments," Samuel expressed his joy to BBC Radio 5 Live.
A Journey from the Bottom to the Top
Just two years ago, Samuel's tennis career took a hit due to bone bruising in his right arm, causing him to drop to almost 2,000th in the world rankings. Fast forward to 2026, and Samuel is now inside the top 100 in the ATP rankings, celebrating his biggest paycheck yet of $140,000 (£103,000).
His rise to prominence includes a run to the French Open semi-finals, a Wimbledon wildcard, and his third Challenger crown of the year in Winnipeg.
A New Grand Slam Appearance for the British Athlete
Samuel's impressive performances this year have secured him automatic qualification for the Australian Open in January, completing his set of major appearances. He joins compatriot Katie Boulter in the second round of the US Open, after she defeated American wildcard Carol Young Suh Lee 6-4 3-6 6-0.
Adjusting to the Big Leagues
Admitting to being starstruck at the French Open, Samuel is learning to adapt to his new surroundings. "I'm definitely more comfortable being around those top guys because I could be playing them the next day," he said.
In his match against Machac, Samuel was clinical, dropping just five points on his nine service games in the opening two sets. He recovered from a 2-0 deficit in the third set to win the next six games, setting up a meeting with Czech Jiri Lehecka in the second round.
