German Airport Worker Dies of Malaria After 'Mosquito Arrives on Plane'
BBC News reports on a tragic incident at Frankfurt Airport where a worker has died of malaria, allegedly contracted from a mosquito that arrived on a plane.
German public health officials believe the mosquitoes, carriers of the rare disease, were introduced to the airport via an incoming flight.
Six employees were initially infected, with five still receiving medical treatment. Traps have been installed, and mosquito samples will be analyzed to determine their species and origin.
"Sadly, we must confirm that one employee has died as a result of the infection," a Fraport spokesperson told the BBC. They encourage employees to consult a doctor if experiencing any symptoms.
The outbreak follows a similar incident in July, where four employees were affected, highlighting the rare occurrence of airport-transmitted malaria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malaria is primarily found in tropical regions and is spread by specific types of mosquitoes.
While preventable and curable, malaria can have severe consequences if left undiagnosed or untreated.
