The programme comes as industry groups in developing economies seek cooperation with China, pairing equipment with skills training and support for local deployment.

The Global Robot Application Exploration Program

This initiative was unveiled at the World Robot Conference on August 20th. Proposed by the World Robot Cooperation Organization and the Chinese Institute of Electronics, it seeks to:

  • Offer free trials for 1,000 real-world application scenarios per year.
  • Facilitate customisation based on local needs.

China's Rise as a Robotics Exporter

China has emerged as a leading robotics exporter, according to Wang Jun, deputy head of the General Administration of Customs. In the first half of 2026, China exported 6.29 billion yuan worth of industrial robots to 141 countries and regions, representing an 18.6% year-on-year increase.

International Collaboration

At a recent conference, association heads from Southeast Asia, Nepal, and Cameroon expressed interest in cooperating with China:

  • Southeast Asia aims to deploy more industrial robots as their automobile and semiconductor industries grow.
  • Cameroon prioritises agriculture and mining for robotics deployment.
  • Nepal seeks a combination of imports, local research, and a national deployment strategy.

Skills and Distribution of Benefits

The World Bank's "Future Jobs" report highlights that while industrial robot adoption in Southeast Asia and other developing regions increased manufacturing employment and earnings, the distribution of these gains depends on available skills:

  • Productivity and scale gains from robots outweigh job losses.
  • Skills training is crucial to ensure workers can integrate, program, and adapt robotics systems effectively.
