Scientists regarded as the godfathers of artificial intelligence have warned that governments are not prepared for a potential AI explosion.
SAN FRANCISCO (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 29th Sep, 2026) Computer scientists Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, considered the godfathers of artificial intelligence (AI), have significantly contributed to the development of current AI technology. They now warn that governments are not ready for an AI explosion.
In a paper issued by the two scientists, they expressed concern about an AI explosion during which technology could advance dramatically within a few months.
More than 20 people contributed to the paper, including Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark and OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki.
The paper urged politicians worldwide to take action. Their concerns stemmed from the possibility that AI technology could improve itself without human intervention. Once AI systems achieve this, a single developer could accomplish tasks previously requiring millions of human researchers.
The authors stated that automated AI technology is a potential trigger for an AI explosion. They predicted that this would be the most significant technological development in human history, with progress achieved over years happening within months. The risk of losing human control over AI systems would increase, while the authority of states, companies, and governments would diminish.
They recommended:
- Implementing transparency-based reporting on AI-related progress in policymaking
- Preparing for an AI explosion
Anthropic and OpenAI have both agreed to allow independent evaluations of their companies’ models.
According to the paper, early evidence suggests an AI explosion is possible and rapid progress could lead to the emergence of far more intelligent AI systems. While the likelihood is uncertain, the paper emphasized the need to control the pace of progress in AI.
