Govt, JI Agree to Hold Talks on Petroleum Prices and Inflation Relief
Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal expressed the government's commitment to easing the financial burden on citizens regarding petroleum prices, welcoming positive input from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). This was during a press conference with JI leadership, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, and Punjab Minister and Chairman Cabinet Committee on Law and Order Khawaja Salman Rafique.
Iqbal noted that JI is a sensible political party, respecting their democratic right to protest, and both parties share the common goal of providing relief to the people. He announced that the government will commence meetings with JI's expert team from Monday, openly welcoming practical recommendations to reduce petroleum prices.
Appreciating JI's record of peaceful protests, Iqbal emphasized the importance of political stability for economic recovery, as investors are reluctant to enter an unstable environment. He stressed that it is collectively responsible to avoid instability, as Pakistan's financial recovery hinges on a peaceful nation.
The federal minister revealed that the government is extending its hand for cooperation to combat inflation and alleviate the financial strain on citizens. He added that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is keen to reduce public pressure and the government is receptive to all positive suggestions.
Recalling the country's near-bankruptcy state just four years ago, Iqbal stated that Pakistan has made significant strides and is now navigating away from severe economic danger. Regarding the IMF program, he clarified that the government is choosing to complete it successfully, despite not being a mandatory requirement.
Rana Sanaullah echoed the positive sentiment, hoping that the joint dialogue between the government and JI would lead to productive outcomes. He noted that the government has previously benefited from JI's suggestions on IPPs, contributing to efforts to reduce consumer burdens.
