Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of prevention over treatment for heart disease and highlighted the necessity of adopting healthy lifestyle changes. She made these remarks on World Heart Day, offering her tribute to the dedication of doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff.
In a special message, Nawaz Sharif expressed her commitment to establishing cath labs and cardiology centers in all district hospitals across Punjab. Successful procedures have been conducted on 7,294 heart patients at these labs in six districts: Jhelum, Jhang, Vehari, Kasur, Mianwali, and Bahawalnagar.
Angiography was performed on 4,448 patients, while 2,763 underwent angioplasty. Notably, two patients were successfully fitted with temporary pacemakers at the cath lab of District Headquarters Hospital Kasur.
The chief minister aimed to have cath labs operational in eight districts by November and seven by February. She directed that free medicines be provided at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology and other cardiac hospitals, ensuring access to free stents, bypass procedures, blood pressure, and diabetes screening through initiatives like Clinics on Wheels and field hospitals.
Maryam Nawaz appealed to students to avoid junk food and smoking, stressing the need for state-of-the-art cardiac centers in every division of Punjab. She also called for awareness campaigns about heart disease targeted at women and educational programs regarding children’s heart health and physical activity in schools.
Her ultimate goal is to protect every citizen of Punjab from heart disease and ensure a healthy lifestyle for all.
