Nepal Flash Floods: Heavy Casualties Feared
BBC News reports on devastating flash floods in northern Nepal that have led to a feared loss of life. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, in the Rasuwa district, north of Kathmandu, bordering the Himalayan region of Tibet.
A massive flash flood swept through the area, causing significant damage and destroying villages and infrastructure, including a hydropower dam. The primary cause is believed to be melting snow from Tibet flowing into the Bhote Koshi river.
Officials from the Nepal Disaster Management Authority have urged people living near riverbanks in vulnerable areas to remain alert and take precautions. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with twelve people already rescued.
"Our logistics company has seven container trucks there, all staffed by Nepali employees. We have lost contact with all of them. There is no signal, so we cannot reach anyone," Yee Liang, a Chinese businessman based in Kathmandu.
The scale of the disaster is expected to be severe, potentially exceeding last year’s floods that killed 18 people. 13 police officers are missing from two posts in Rasuwa, and communication with dozens of other officers has been cut off.
