'Hitchy is always with us' - the keeper who died after one-punch attack

FA Cup: Remembering Barton Town Keeper James Hitchcock

BBC Sport delves into the story of James Hitchcock, a non-league football goalkeeper who tragically passed away after a single punch to the head.

A Popular Team-Mate Known as 'Hitchy'

"Even now, more than 18 months on, it has still not fully sunk in. I see little Freddie growing up and it hits me so hard." - Chris Hitchcock, reflecting on the loss of his son, James.

James, affectionately known as 'Hitchy' to his family and friends, was a popular figure at Barton Town, a part-time Lincolnshire club. His sudden passing in December 2024 left a profound impact on his loved ones and the tight-knit football community.

The Final Game and Tragic Attack

Just before his first Christmas as a father, James' final game was a 1-1 draw with Bottesford Town in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division. His manager, Anthony Bowsley, recalls a memorable save James made during the match.

"As he was coming off, I said to him 'great save Nigel Martyn' because Hitchy was a Leeds fan and he had a little chuckle to himself."

The following day, on his way back from a day out with friends, James was struck from behind at York Railway Station. He died in hospital from a skull fracture and brain damage.

A Footballing Family's Loss

His widow, April, and their son, Freddie, now aged two, will be in attendance at Barton Town's historic FA Cup third qualifying round tie against Chorley. April finds solace in being around the club where her husband used to play, but the grief remains profound.

"It's really sad looking at where James used to stand in goal and saying 'where is he?'" - April Hitchcock, reflecting on her husband's absence.

Team-mate Jack Bulless shares the sentiment, describing the loss as a "numb feeling." Andy Norfolk, a long-time friend, recalls their annual Christmas get-together, where the tragic event unfolded.

Remembering a Loving Husband and Father

Leeds Crown Court heard about the impact of the punch, which led to James' fatal injuries. April's words echo the profound loss felt by those who knew him:

"I'd just put Freddie to bed when I got a call to say James had been involved in an assault and was in a critical condition."

James' story serves as a testament to the fragility of life and the lasting impact one person can have on others.
