This season marked a new era in the Premier League with a record nine clubs starting the campaign with new managers.
The post-Pep Guardiola era officially began at
Manchester City
under Enzo Maresca, while Andoni Iraola took over at
Liverpool
after Arne Slot's sacking. Xabi Alonso is the latest to join the managerial revolving door at
Chelsea
.
So, how did these new faces fare after an eventful first weekend?
Marco Rose – Bournemouth
The German successor to Iraola came within six minutes of starting his Premier League career with a statement win at
Manchester City
, only to concede two late goals for a heart-breaking loss.
Rose will be frustrated by the manner of City's goals, but he saw enough in those first 84 minutes to deliver early signs of encouragement.
Xabi Alonso - Chelsea
Not a bad start with a lead after 31 seconds and a satisfactory start, but Alonso witnessed both the good and bad.
The positives included:
- Attacking trio Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and newcomer Morgan Rogers scoring and combining effectively.
The negatives:
- Failure to find a better goalkeeper than the unreliable Robert Sanchez, who was at fault for both
Fulham
goals.
Alonso must find an answer quickly to avoid a similar fate.
Pierre Sage - Crystal Palace
Sage's highly-regarded debut ended in a disappointing defeat at
Everton
, but he also knows that the outcome could have been better.
Palace had chances in the first half, hitting the woodwork twice, and Jean-Phillipe Mateta was wasteful. Sage's opening weekend was not helped by a contract dispute surrounding Mateta.
