Hyrox Athlete Apologises for Continuing Race After Soiling Herself

BBC News reports on an incident involving an Australian athlete, Joanna Wietrzyk, who faced criticism for continuing to compete in a Hyrox event in Beijing despite soiling herself.

Wietrzyk offered her "sincere apology" for the incident during the indoor fitness competition on Saturday, stating that she should have withdrawn from the race. Footage of the event sparked concerns about hygiene, leading Hyrox co-founder Moritz Fürste to apologise for their handling of the situation.

In a statement, Wietrzyk expressed regret for her decision to continue and acknowledged the discomfort caused. She also stated that she was healthy at the start of the race and had no reason to expect illness.

Following the backlash, Wietrzyk, who won the race, forfeited her win. She further apologised in a social media post, addressing the people of China, fellow competitors, spectators, and Hyrox organisers.

Hyrox defended their protocols, acknowledging an unforeseen situation that blurred their biocontaminant and medical procedures. Fürste promised to improve event processes to prevent similar incidents. The company also vowed to ban anyone sending abuse or threats to Wietrzyk from future events.

Hyrox, founded in Germany in 2017, has gained global popularity with its unique race format combining running and fitness exercises.
