Those in power thought Imran Khan would be politically sidelined and eliminated by imprisonment, but Pakistan’s politics now revolves around him, says the senior journalist.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Sep, 2026) Renowned journalist and senior analyst Hamid Mir has analysed the country’s current political situation and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf long march, stating that the formula used by powerful circles and the government to sideline PTI founder Imran Khan from politics has completely failed.
In a vlog, he noted that those in power believed Imran Khan’s political chapter would end after he was imprisoned, but this is not materializing. Pakistan’s entire politics currently revolves around Imran Khan. On one side, the government and its allies strive to keep him in jail at all costs, while on the other, the entire opposition unites in their struggle for his release.
Imran Khan has emerged as an extremely popular leader not only within the country but also internationally.
Power Politics: A Thing of the Past?
The senior journalist argued that traditional power politics in Pakistan is now on its last legs. Imran Khan’s unwavering and resolute stance has put an end to the traditional politics not only of his party but also of all other forces.
He stated that there had previously been an assumption that a government backed by an American signal would remain in power, but if the incumbent government were genuinely popular among the people, it would not need to hide behind containers. From Gilgit-Baltistan to Balochistan, the country’s youth have aligned with a single ideological narrative, leaving the ruling elite deeply fearful.
PTI’s Internal Dynamics and the Long March
Regarding PTI’s internal decisions and their planned long march on September 27th, Hamid Mir made a surprising revelation. He claimed that some party members believed supporting new provinces could bring relief to Imran Khan. However, most rejected this proposal, considering it inappropriate at the current time. He added that the government then tried to halt the long march by offering relief to Imran Khan, but PTI declined because Imran Khan had issued explicit instructions to carry out the march under any circumstance and head towards Islamabad.
