The past four years have been the weakest for Pakistan’s economic growth, and no number of IMF agreements or SIFC initiatives can deliver growth until the political crisis ends, according to former finance minister Asad Umar.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Sep, 2026) Asad Umar has stated that economic stability cannot arise when Imran Khan, his former prime minister, and his wife are in jail, and his sisters have been arrested, adding that the past four years have been the weakest for Pakistan’s economic growth.

Speaking on a private television program, he expressed:

"When will they understand that no matter how much effort they make, sign IMF agreements or establish the SIFC, economic growth will not be possible until the political crisis ends?"

Umar asserted that unless the political crisis and its underlying causes are resolved, no IMF programs or SIFC initiatives can bring about economic growth. He urged people to consider what global news an investor interested in Pakistan would receive: news that the country’s former prime minister was in jail and that his wife was also imprisoned.

He further noted the arrest of the former prime minister’s sisters and his children, who were subsequently released after a few days.

"This cycle of arrests and crackdowns has continued for the past three weeks, with raids being conducted on homes at the union-council level in Islamabad. How, then, can anyone believe that economic stability can come to the country under the current circumstances?"
