India Opens Baglihar Dam Gates Without Intimation to Pakistan, Violating IWT

Indian authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have opened the gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Project without prior intimation to Pakistan, in a clear violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), at a time when heavy monsoon rains have already swollen rivers across the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, an advisory issued by the Additional District Magistrate Ramban stated that the gates of the dam at Chanderkote, Ramban, would be opened today (August 19) for a "periodic silt flushing operation" of the Baglihar reservoir. The advisory warned that the release of water during this operation was "likely to cause a sudden rise in the water level and increase the flow velocity of River Chenab downstream of the Baglihar Dam, posing a potential risk to life and property.

In light of the above, remember that:

  • Such unilateral actions by India violate the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty.
  • Heavy monsoon rains already pose significant challenges to river management.
  • Opening the dam gates without notice increases the risk of flooding and damage downstream.
