Inquiry Ordered Into Delays In KP Mini Hydropower Projects
PESHAWAR, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 10th Sep, 2026) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Energy and Power Minister Nazir Ahmad Abbasi has ordered an inquiry into delays and slow progress on mini and micro hydropower projects and sought a report within a week.
He directed Energy and Power Secretary Nisar Ahmad and Chief Executive of the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) to investigate the matter after receiving public complaints about incomplete projects and slow execution, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
The minister warned that negligence or misconduct would no longer be tolerated and stated that officials found responsible for negligence or corruption would face removal and strict action under the law.
Meeting Highlights:
- 16 projects under Phase-I of the Mini/Micro Hydropower Stations Programme had been completed.
- 58 of 75 hydropower schemes damaged in the 2022 floods had also been restored under a rehabilitation programme.
- Work on the remaining 17 flood-affected schemes was continuing and would be completed this year.
- The community-based projects would cost around Rs6 billion and collectively generate 29 megawatts of electricity.
- 71 mini and micro hydropower projects were underway under the second phase of the programme.
The minister also questioned the concerned project director about a reported loss of around Rs1.5 billion due to faulty designs of projects damaged during the floods, directing that responsibility for the lapse be determined through the inquiry.
Meanwhile, 13 solar-powered mini-grid stations in merged districts have entered their final stages of completion and are scheduled to be inaugurated next month. These projects will provide low-cost, environment-friendly electricity for domestic and commercial use.
Abbasi also directed the department to conduct surveys in Hazara and Malakand divisions to identify new sites for public welfare energy projects and initiate schemes according to local requirements.
