Harry Kane: England striker plays down returning to Premier League to break Alan Shearer record

BBC Sport presents the latest news and insights from the world of sport.

Harry Kane says the desire to return to the Premier League to break Alan Shearer‘s all-time scoring record has diminished over time. Since joining Bayern Munich in 2023, Kane has scored 73 goals last season and 98 league goals in three seasons, only 47 short of Shearer’s 260.

"When I first left, for sure it was something I thought – I would definitely be coming back," he stated. “That itch isn’t there as much anymore."

Kane, who moved from Tottenham for £86.4m three years ago, is currently discussing a new contract with Bayern Munich. He attributes his recent success to the team’s style of play under manager Vincent Kompany, who he credits with elevating his game.

"I think this is the best version of myself… since the boss has come in he has elevated my game to another level," Kane said.
