KP Govt Decides To Introduce First-ever Comprehensive Transport Policy

PESHAWAR, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Sep, 2026) The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to introduce the province’s first-ever comprehensive transport policy aimed at establishing a safe, accessible, efficient and sustainable transport system.
Draft Policy Discussion
A consultative session was held on Friday, attended by stakeholders from various departments and institutions. Samiullah Khan, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Transport and Mass Transit, participated as the chief guest.

Policy Implementation and Objectives
The policy will be formally implemented after approval by the provincial cabinet. It aims to:
- Provide a clear roadmap for improving the transport sector.
- Reduce road accidents.
- Ensure affordable and inclusive mobility, particularly for women, persons with disabilities, and underserved segments of society.
Key Initiatives
Samiullah Khan highlighted several new initiatives, including:
- A circular railway project in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Railways.
- Electric bikes for women and girls.
- Promotion of green transport across the province.
He noted that preparations for launching an electric-bike initiative in Peshawar were complete, with plans to expand the program subsequently to other regions.
Transport Master Plan and Green Initiatives
A transport master plan is being prepared for Peshawar, and feasibility studies for divisional headquarters will incorporate green-energy transport initiatives.
Samiullah Khan emphasized that the 2026 transport policy is just the beginning, and it will be further improved based on the province’s needs, priorities, and stakeholder recommendations.
Policy Benefits
Muhammad Zubair, Secretary Transport, explained that a policy provides a roadmap for achieving clearly defined objectives. He stated that the Chief Minister had directed the Transport Department to formulate the policy, which has now been completed.
Additionally, work will be undertaken on an electric vehicles policy in line with the CM's directives.
Key Features of the Draft Policy
The draft policy envisages:
- Improved connectivity between different modes of transport.
- Modern infrastructure for freight, logistics, and trade.
- Better regulation, regional trade corridors, digital systems, transparent governance, and effective monitoring to strengthen transport institutions.
