Rugby Union: Eddie Hearn's Impact on the Premiership
BBC Sport reports on Eddie Hearn's growing influence in rugby union, following his meetings with Premiership bosses in Monaco.
Hearn, the renowned boxing promoter who runs Matchroom Sport, has made a strategic move into rugby by signing notable players Finn Russell and Henry Pollock. This expansion into the sport has been backed by senior figures in the English game.
Simon Massie-Taylor, Prem Rugby's CEO, expressed his belief that Hearn's involvement will drive growth and innovation:
"[Matchroom] will be a force for good. [Hearn] sees that rugby is on a great trajectory and he's very pro the Prem... He doesn't want to be a disruptor. He wants to work with the league, but he definitely wants to agitate for more growth and sees a lot of potential."
Hearn himself has spoken of his ambition to "turbo-charge" rugby union and its players, suggesting he could bring new opportunities for commercial growth and event promotion.
The financial health of the Premiership was also a focus, with the release of the second annual financial monitoring report showing improved revenues and reduced losses for all 10 clubs. The report predicts that most clubs will be in profit within the next five years, with significant external investments made in clubs like Newcastle Red Bulls, Exeter Chiefs, and Bath Rugby.
Massie-Taylor confirmed the Prem's plan to expand to 12 teams by the 2030/31 season, emphasizing the importance of sustainable growth and reinvestment.
